Continuous development of teaching skills is essential because, just as the world is continuously changing, so are the things that students need to learn. Keeping up-to-date helps language students to be more flexible in terms of adapting different methods for improvement. Not only should they at learn school but also from other sources like podcasts, online news and movies. Exposing oneself to a wide range of language sources increases one’s awareness of the things around us, and this can be shared and used productively in class.
As an academic trainer, I believe that training builds relationships among teachers, and this makes it more fun and interesting. My aim as a trainer is to emphasize to teachers that learning is much more than just memorizing, it is also enjoying new experiences and knowledge. Do not be scared to teach, especially if it is something new to you. Now, let’s look at some important tips on how to choose the right teacher for your online class.
“Let experience be your best teacher.”
1. YOUR ONLINE TEACHER SHOULD KNOW HOW TO ASSESS YOUR NEEDS
On the first day, teachers need to get to know you, and you need to get to know the teacher. The primary reason is to build a good relationship with you as you are going to be having classes together. Secondly, teachers need to assess your strengths and weaknesses so they know what you already know and what you need to improve on. They also need to know about your learning style so that they can adjust their teaching style in a way that it is easier for you to learn. Moreover, a good online teacher keeps track of his/her student’s performance and helps you see where you have improved and what needs to be done for improvement to continue.
2. YOUR ONLINE TEACHER MUST MAKE YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE AND INTERESTED IN CLASS
Another thing that a good online teacher should have is an approach and a personality that makes you feel relaxed. In class, I apply some of the things I learned from theater-plays to make it more energetic and fun. That is why I always remind the teachers that they often have to be “animated” when teaching, to keep their students interested and motivated, but teachers also recognize that some students prefer a calmer style so it’s important for your teacher to be flexible. A boring class can hinder the student’s learning. Now, sometimes students can feel stressed and down so we train our teachers to be sensitive to that. Teachers need to be supportive and encouraging, and they need to show students how to achieve their study goals without feeling stressed.
3. YOUR ONLINE TEACHER SHOULD BE GOOD AT USING ONLINE TOOLS
Online teaching can sometimes be a problem when the technology goes wrong, so knowing how to do simple troubleshooting is essential for teachers to minimize class disruptions. Try to have both a laptop and a smartphone available. If the laptop dies or the main internet connection goes, the teacher can use backup options. In this way, panic and delays can be avoided.
4. YOUR ONLINE TEACHER SHOULD BE GOOD AT THE SUBJECT AND CORRECT YOUR MISTAKES
Lastly, a good online teacher should be good at the subject. A good teacher can handle all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), and can integrate them, as happens in real life. Being good at the subject also means that the teacher is prepared for the lesson and can anticipate what problems you might have in class. A good teacher will also correct your mistakes in a way that helps you learn and improve.
